The next day I got a phone call from our doctors to be told that the midwife at the hospital hadn’t been labeled properly so Keighley had to have them done again. Which although annoying and inconvenient was not a huge problem. I phoned around the and managed eventually get some more blood papers so we could get the tests done. Also we found out a lot more about the downs syndrome test at this point by reading things online. We originally thought that it required a long needle to be stuck into the womb but we discovered that, that was after they had done a scan and two blood tests to see what the percentage chance there was of it having downs.

The following Monday we had our dating scan and midwife appointment. That morning we made our way to the hospital and Keighley checked herself in, we had a short wait until Keighley was called in. She got herself settled in and the scan got underway, to be honest, the person who conducted the scan wasn’t that good. Where in previous scans we had been talked through it and had things explained, this lady didn’t do that she just conducted the scan almost without word. We did find out how the baby was and that everything was moving as expected, we also got 3 photos. The midwife appointment after went well, the basic bloods were taken so Keighley could be tested for all manner of things. We left the hospital that day extremely happy.

The one thing about pregnancy is the amount of freebies that people want to give you. It starts right from the moment you go to the doctors and get confirmation that your wife is expecting. When you go to the doctors you will get a bounty pack. In the bounty pack there are a few sample pots if things like stretch cream but mainly there were leaflets and also a voucher to claim another bounty pack. Also supermarkets have various baby and toddler clubs who almost all of them will give you vouchers for free baby starter kits and baby changing bags all very helpful stuff. 🙂

Following that scan we tried to get on with everything as normal. The next major event in the pregnancy was the first midwife appointment. On the 17th of August we went to Barling Magna Primary School and met the midwife who did all the stuff like filling in paperwork and basically seeing how Keighley was it was that afternoon that we felt confident enough to claim the freebies that your wife gets during pregnancy all thanks to Bounty.

That afternoon we went to the epu and had a scan, before that though we had a wait of 40 mins but the results of the scan made the long wait worth it. Keighley got on the bed and the midwife explained that it was going to be an intervaginal scan and that their might be some discomfort, which Keighley said she understood. With that the scan began and I could tell that the midwife was looking for a baby in the right place, which she found. The next thing she did was to check the heart beat which we heard and that was when Keighley cried tears of joy, our baby was alive and well and growing correctly. 🙂

One of the things I hadn’t banked on with pregnancy are the problems and stresses involved, which considering the miscarriage we had a year ago you would have thought I would have. One of the main things that started from early on were the pains in Keighleys stomach area. Naturally we were worried but going on Google and talk to our doctor who said they were normal did relax our minds slightly, well it did until the 2nd of August. On the 2nd of August Keighley had stabbing pains in her stomach very similar to pain she had when we had lost the baby a year ago, however we decided to wait and see if she started spotting, even though I was, and I’m sure Keighley was also, reliving the same fears and pain from a year ago when we’d lost the baby. The next day which was Friday the 3rd August Keighley woke me up and said I’m not going into work cause I’m spotting, at that moment I felt a rush of sickness and dread, so that morning I phoned the EPU Early Pregnancy Unit at our local hospital who told us to come in at 2:30 that afternoon for a scan.

One of the things the doctor in Greece suggested was to put our minds at rest that the baby was growing at the right pace and that there was a heart beat was to pay for a private scan back in the UK which we both were up for. In fact that evening we went on Google to find a private scan company in our local area. We found one that charged £70 for the scan, we booked there and then. The date of the scan rolled round, after our honeymoon was over, and the evening of the scan was one of the most amazing days of our lives especially when we heard the heartbeat for the first time. That evening we went round to my parents to show them the scan pictures and told them they can tell our grandparents.

Well we finally found out why Keighley was getting the pains in her side and the pink discharge. It turns out she has a water infection and after her seeing our own doctor and speaking to the epu (Early Pregnancy Unit) both coming back with it normal we took a trip to NHS Direct at the hospital at 11:30pm to be told it was a water infection. At least it has been solved and we can now relax that nothing is wrong with the baby.

We told our parents before the wedding but didn’t tell any one else until the wedding day when we told our brothers and sisters. Keighleys elder brother John offered to pay for a private scan on our honeymoon in Greece. Keighley also needed two blood tests to see if her HGC had doubled, which it had. Smiles all round there. The day of the scan rolled round extremely quickly and we went with Keighleys brother and sister in law and the doctors was like entering a really posh hotel. Keighley had the scan and we discovered that she was just over 5 weeks pregnant and that everything was proceeding as normal, we were so relieved since we had a miscarriage last year.

I found out I was going to be a dad from my then fiancee around 4 days before our wedding and I must have had every emotion under the sun go through my mind from joy to fear and everything in between. There was also a how did that happen moment, which is rather obvious really. It’s just that although it was not unwelcome it was a bit of a shock. Yes we had been trying but we had had months of nothing so I certainly wasn’t expecting it right on top of one of the most stressful times of our lives.
